The Carey Darley Cup

Established in 1992, the Carey Darley Cup honours the great rivalry of two South Australian football clubs and icons. The Cup is presented to the winner of the Glenelg and South Adelaide clash, alternating at each home ground annually. The history between the Tigers and the Panthers has seen many famous encounters, and in it’s 34th year, the Carey Darley Cup will be presented to the successful team this Saturday.

Peter Carey

Peter “Super”Carey is a record-holding premiership Captain of Glenelg Football Club. An icon of the game, Super played 448 games and booted 521 goals for Glenelg between 1971 and 1988.

Super represented South Australia 19 times, won the Fos Williams Medal in 1981, and was named All-Australian in 1979 and 1980. Starting as a half-forward, he kicked 70 goals in 1973, played a key role in that premiership, then moved into the ruck for the rest of his career. As Glenelg captain from 1983 to 1988, he led the club to premierships in 1985 and 1986 and won three Best and Fairest awards, later earning Hall of Fame inductions at state and national level.

Peter Darley

Peter Darley began his league career with South Adelaide in 1962 while still a schoolboy at Prince Alfred College and quickly became one of the state’s greatest footballers. He played a key role in the club’s 1964 premiership as a ruckman, known for his marking, strength, and stamina, and went on to complete 206 league and 13 state games despite early injury setbacks. He served as captain-coach from 1967 to 1969, captained again in 1971, and topped the club’s goal kicking in 1974. A state captain in 1968 and 1970, he earned All-Australian honours in 1969 and famously missed a Magarey Medal win in 1968 due to suspension despite tying for first place. Loyal to South Adelaide despite interest from VFL clubs, he won a record seven Knuckey Cups and was later honoured with Hall of Fame inductions and selection as first ruck in the club’s greatest team.
