The Bays defeated the ladder-leaders on Saturday afternoon in an impressive, high-pressure clash that honoured Tiger veteran Jonty Scharenberg for his 150th league match.

Following a tough loss against the Panthers at home in Round 5, the Bays turned their attention to the strongest team in season 2026 so far, hitting them from the first siren with elevated pressure.

“Coming off a loss against South, the boys were pretty disappointed in that performance. It wasn’t horrible, but we (probably) didn’t play the wet weather conditions all that well. Our pressure dropped away, so South out-tackled us pretty comfortably in that game,” Doc said in his Round 6 match wrap, with the noticeable lift in pressure and intent against the competition leaders highlighting a clear improvement in the Bays’ performance.

It was a fantastic balance of dominance between the Bays senior and junior players, who worked together seamlessly to win the game.

Glenelg’s 150-gamer Scharenberg (23 disposals, 3 tackles), premiership-players Corey Lyons (26 disposals, 2 goals) and Matt Allen (26 disposals, 1 goal) all provided slick ball-use and instrumental midfield pressure.

“It was amazing for Jonty to reach 150 games at SANFL level, obviously balancing out the rest of his life with really hard training commitments, so for him to win… Corey, I thought was outstanding, Matty Allen played a really strong game, Lachie Hosie and Liam (McBean), all of the veterans stood up”

One of the most impressive performances from the day came from the Bays recent debutants.

“I think what was really pleasing at the moment is that we’re getting great contributions from our senior guys, but also some of our younger guys coming in. Charlie Robinson-Cay, in his first game, to impact the way he did and kick a couple goals, but also his pressure,” Doc commended Robinson-Cay’s performance.

“Charlie was one that we were really keen to get hold of. Great athletic profile, he’s fast and he’s courageous and he kicks the ball a really long way as well. He’s got some attributes that are going to help him become a really good league footballer.”

21-year-old Robinson-Cay finished the match with two goals from 13 disposals, paired with Round 5 debutant Travis Wilson, aged 18, kicking his first league goal (15 disposals, 9 tackles), it was a clear sign of the depth and promise across our playing group.

The Bays senior playing group will spend the next 10-day turnaround focusing on a high-level training program, ensuring the senior squad is well prepared for the Round 7 clash against the Crows on May 23rd.
