VALE ROB GILLIES
Glenelg Football Club is in mourning following the passing of former Board member, devoted Club man and dear friend, Robert Gillies, on Tuesday, February 10.
Rob, whose tireless and passionate commitment to the Bays was recognised with Life Membership at last year’s AGM, was a beloved member of the Glenelg Football Club community for over 36 years.
An accomplished businessman, Rob was a foundation member of the Bays’ coterie group, the Captain’s Club. He also held Life Membership and Ambassadorship of the Liquor Industry Golf Club of South Australia for more than 25 years and was a respected Managing Director within the hospitality industry prior to his retirement.
Rob’s devoted expertise in venue operations guided him throughout an 11-year tenure on the Glenelg Football Club Board, while his generous spirit and kind heart led him to dedicate many years to charitable work across South Australia.
His lifelong commitment to service began at an early age. Rob joined the Australian Defence Force in April 1969 and served with the 7th Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment (7 RAR). Deployed to Vietnam in February 1970, he served as an infantry soldier, forward scout and later as a gunner. He concluded his service as a Full Corporal, Section Leader 7, 8 Platoon, C Company. Rob returned home in March 1971.
Rob’s military service was honoured during the Club’s ANZAC Day Grand Final rematches in 2024 and 2025, moments of deep pride for both Rob and the Glenelg community.
A cherished Club man in every sense, Rob provided invaluable mentorship and guidance to staff, players, managers and members. His warmth, generosity and vibrant spirit were central to the Club’s fundraising efforts and community initiatives. His influence will continue to be felt throughout the Glenelg Football Club for many years to come.
Rob passed away following a long and courageous battle with leukaemia, which he faced with characteristic optimism, strength and dignity.
During the presentation of Rob’s Life Membership in February 2025, President David Whelan reflected:
“Despite facing significant health challenges in recent years, Rob has remained an inspiration through his resilience and dedication. It has been truly special to share the Club’s recent success with him.”
Rob is survived by his beloved wife, Maree, their four sons and his cherished grandchildren.
The GFC Board, management, staff, players and volunteers extend their deepest condolences to the Gillies family and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
In lieu of flowers, Rob’s family kindly ask those wishing to show their support consider making a donation to the Leukaemia Foundation. Donations can be made here.
